Why This Work Matters: The National Picture
Homelessness is not just a big-city crisis — it touches families, veterans, seniors, and people with disabilities in every state, including right here in Central Florida. Here is what the latest national research shows.
People Homeless Nationwide
Counted homeless on a single night in January 2025, per HUD’s Annual Homelessness Assessment Report — the first year-over-year decline since 2016.
Sheltered vs. Unsheltered
Roughly two-thirds of people experiencing homelessness stayed in emergency shelters or transitional housing, while about a third were unsheltered on the street or in places not meant for habitation.
Families Experiencing Homelessness
Homelessness among families with children dropped more than 11% between 2024 and 2025, but families — including children — still make up a significant share of the homeless population nationwide.
Homeless Individuals with Pets
Estimates vary widely, but research generally finds that somewhere between 1 in 10 and 1 in 4 people experiencing homelessness care for at least one companion animal.
Alcohol Dependency
SAMHSA and National Coalition for the Homeless research estimates that roughly 38% of people experiencing homelessness struggle with alcohol dependency.
Drug Use Disorders
The same research estimates roughly 26% of people experiencing homelessness struggle with other substance use disorders; about two-thirds have a lifetime history of drug or alcohol dependency.
Domestic Violence & Homelessness
An estimated 38% of domestic violence survivors become homeless at some point in their lives, and studies find that a large majority of homeless women report a history of severe physical or sexual abuse.
Veterans Experiencing Homelessness
Veteran homelessness reached its lowest recorded level in 2025, down more than half since HUD began tracking veteran-specific data in 2009 — but tens of thousands of veterans are still without stable housing.
Figures are drawn from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s 2025 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report (Point-in-Time Count), SAMHSA and National Coalition for the Homeless research on substance use, and domestic violence & homelessness research compiled by the National Network to End Domestic Violence and the American Bar Association. Figures such as “battered person syndrome” prevalence specifically are not separately tracked in national data; the domestic-violence figures above reflect the closest available research. Estimates vary by study and methodology and are provided for general awareness, not as precise counts.
