It can be a mother who has slept with one ear open for years because her son or daughter may need her during the night.
It can be a father who gets up and goes to work exhausted because the mortgage, food, transportation, equipment and everyday bills still have to be paid.
It can be two parents who cannot remember the last time they ate dinner together without watching the clock, checking a phone or worrying about what might happen while they are away.
Their conversations can slowly become appointments, medications, transportation, insurance, school meetings, benefits, bills and tomorrow's schedule.
It can be a brother or sister who loves their sibling deeply while quietly wondering what responsibilities they may someday carry.
It can be grandparents growing older while still caring for an adult son or daughter and confronting their own health problems at the same time.
And sometimes it is one caregiver doing all of it alone.

Sometimes the Caregiver Needs Someone to Care About Them.
Caregiving can be an extraordinary expression of love. It can also mean interrupted sleep, missed appointments, financial pressure, cancelled plans and years of putting somebody else's needs before your own.
A caregiver may need time to sleep.
Mom may need to finally attend her own medical appointment.
Dad may need an afternoon where he is not responsible for the next crisis.
Parents may need uninterrupted time with their other children.
And sometimes two exhausted people simply need a few hours to remember that they are still a couple.
Heaven Sent wants to help families identify safe and appropriate respite, caregiver-support and community resources before exhaustion becomes crisis.
Go Have Dinner Together.
Take an afternoon.
Sit somewhere quiet.
Spend time with your other children.
Take care of an errand without rushing.
Talk to each other about something other than medications, appointments, insurance, transportation and tomorrow's schedule.
Heaven Sent cannot promise to repair relationships or marriages. We can recognize that continuous caregiver stress affects entire families, and responsible respite may give caregivers time to rest, reconnect and care for their own well-being.
Respite is not abandonment. Sometimes taking a break is part of continuing to care.
Employment Can Be an Opportunity. It Is Never the Price of Receiving Dignity.
Some people with disabilities want a career. Some want part-time work. Some may benefit from supported employment. Some are not able to work. Others simply do not want employment to be their current goal.
Work Is a Pathway — Not a Requirement.
When employment is part of the person's own goals, Heaven Sent can help identify appropriate workforce, training, Vocational Rehabilitation, benefits-counseling, accommodation and employment-support resources.

Safe Harbor: Building a Place for the Next Step.
Heaven Sent goes to the people. Safe Harbor gives people a place to move forward.
The planned Safe Harbor Master Program is being developed as an integrated pathway bringing housing, supportive services, workforce opportunities, transportation, food and nutrition, disaster preparedness, technology and case management together.
Accessibility is intended to be part of that vision from the beginning — not something added after construction.
Safe Harbor is a development-stage initiative. Planned capacity is not current housing availability and remains subject to financing, approvals, design, construction and program development.

Heaven Sent provides community-based resource navigation, casework, coordination, referrals, practical support and follow-up within available capacity. Direct services, financial assistance, transportation, respite, housing, equipment and other resources depend on eligibility, geography, funding, staffing, provider capacity and program availability. Heaven Sent does not replace licensed medical, behavioral-health, legal, clinical or other regulated professionals. Program eligibility is determined by the administering agency or provider. For immediate danger or a medical emergency, call 911. Faith and pastoral support are voluntary and are not a condition of receiving other Heaven Sent services.
